08/10/2008 - College PREP - Gaffney, SC Alston is a catcher with a body that shows some projection as it continues to physically mature. He shows the ability to catch and throw behind the plate as indicated by his low pop time of 1.87. He will control the running game with his feet and arm. Release is quick and maintains good body control to his target. Arm strength is above average and he can aid in further developing more arm strength through a strict long toss program. Receiving skills are near above average displaying soft hands and works mitt around the baseball well. Blocking skills are solid average and needs some instruction and adjustments. At the plate, Bonds has near above average ability and solid average power. Bat speed is a plus and he shows a feel for the barrel. He transfers weight and utilizes his lower half well through the swing. Alston will get a lot of interest from the college coaches with his abilities to catch and throw from behind the plate.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
