Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

09/21/2008 - College PREP - Overland Park, KS Dane shows as a two way player on the mound and in the outfield. He currently does show and project better in the outfield. His body is long, lean and does show projection as it continues to physically mature. Arm strength is near average and needs to get on a strict long toss program to aid in building more arm strength. At the plate, Ross is a line drive type hitter that shows a solid feel for the barrel. He flashes bat speed and hitting grades will improve with instruction and adjustments at the plate. Dane has abilities with a lot of room to improve. If arm strength comes around, his stock on the mound will rise.

07/10/2008 - Cape Cod Training 2008 - Week 1 Ross pitched between 69-71 with his fastball, and once again threw his secondary pitches around 60 mph. His arm works loose and clean, and he uses his lower half well. His delivery has good balance, and he finishes well out front. He showed some feel to pitch, and did a good job of keeping the ball down. All of this said, he simply does not generate enough arm speed for velocity on his fastball or any depth on his secondary pitches. However, he has made tremendous strides at the plate. Showed excellent hand-eye coordination along with quick hands and excellent bat speed. He showed power to both gaps with potential for more. Ran 7.20 in the 60, slightly better than we saw before, and showed good overall athleticism. At this point, he merits a close look as an outfielder - where he appears to have the skills to play, and where his offensive potential could be of value. We are scheduled to see him again, this time as a primary OF, in September 2008. Has the potential of Class 5 in the OF.

09/02/2007 - College PREP - Kansas City, MO Dane is a tall thin pitcher that will benefit from a strength and conditioning program but is still very young. On the mound, shows that he has an idea of how to throw off speed pitches properly. Motion is balanced and directional with loose arm action. Locates the ball well. With a long toss program, pitching value should increase. At the plate, shows some barrel accuracy but needs to let the ball travel and stay back to drive the ball. Overall, Dane is more of a pitcher and with some hard work over the next two years, he could improve his stock.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
