Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

05/20/2018 - College PREP - Redwood City (San Francisco/San Jose), CA Derrick is a talented 3B/RHP prospect who has a strong, well-built frame. Offensively, Derrick has a square stance with a centered balance and firm front side. He has fluid rhythm with a good load and short stride. Derrick has quick hands and shows fast bat speed with a direct swing path. He gets good extension producing hard contact. Derrick has the ability to use the whole field and the ball jumps off his bat. At the hot corner, Derrick plays with effective pre-pitch actions and quick footwork. He presents his glove and fields the ball in an athletic position. Derrick has a clean exchange leading into a short arm action throwing from a 3/4 arm slot. He has a quick release showing strong, accurate throws across the diamond. He also does a nice job with slow rollers and changing his arm angle depending on the play. On the mound, Derrick has a balanced delivery throwing from a 3/4 arm slot with a clean arm action. He extends through his release and stays square to home plate. Derrick effectively uses his front side and has a controlled landing. He does a nice job rotating with his hips as he finishes towards his target. Derrick locates 3 pitches all with good, late movement. Overall, Derrick is a difference maker on both sides of the ball and will have an impact at the next level.

10/18/2017 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Derrick continues to shine on the diamond and showed very well during his time at the Junior Fall Classic in Arizona. Defensively, this athletic corner INF displays active prep footwork moving well on the balls of his feet. He works into a square/athletic fielding position, gathers well and fires strong/accurate throws across the diamond. As a hitter, Derrick stands in with an open setup with rhythm to load. He battles and works the count, seeing a lot of pitches. He barrels up the ball and looks to use the whole field (collecting 2 singles, and 2B, and 2 BB's). On the mound, this RHP remains compact throughout his delivery and repeats well. He works the zone and challenges hitters to swing the bat. FB now tops out at 84mph while showing slight tail. Curveball has 11/5 shape with late break, proving to be a solid swing and miss pitch. This righty is a reliable arm that will throw strikes and compete. Turner has a solid all-around skill-set that will garner looks from coaches at the next level.

06/03/2017 - 2017 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's National West Derrick is an athletic (5'9"/170) talented, 2-way player who can make things happen in many aspects. Defensively at 3B, he shows active prep with fluid actions. He works around the GB and through it as he gains ground toward 1B. Exchange is clean with strong throws. Backhand is smooth with a quick release. Offensively, this RHH shows a quiet setup with simple actions. Hands are quick as he fires the barrel directly through the zone on a level path. He squares the ball up consistently and hits line-drives. Derrick also has the ability to get on the mound and command the zone. He has a 3-pitch mix with his FB topping out at 83 mph. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape with good action. Changeup shows good arm side run, complimenting his FB well. Derrick has a ton of upside with a bright future ahead of him in the game.

12/27/2016 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic Derrick is a strong, athletic 3B prospect who's plus athleticism allows his tools to play up on the field. He has a very strong arm at the hot corner (82 mph raw velo) and can make the long throws with ease to cut down hitters busting it down the line. He has quick feet and uses his athleticism to move well laterally and show fast reactions and good range to make all the plays at third. He fields low and square to the ball with presented hands to keep everything in from and shows a quick release to get rid of the ball quickly and accurately to his target. At the dish, he shows a middle-away approach, letting the ball travel and using his quick hands to get his fast bat through the zone. His bat speed coupled with extension through contact and his strength leads to pop at the plate and potential for more power as he matures. Keeping the barrel of the bat in the zone longer will lead to more hard contact and base hits moving forward. Derrick is an exciting prospect who we look forward to watching as he develops.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
