Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/LHPPosition Projection

10/19/2011 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic - 2011 Eric is a 2013 graduate and plays first base, as well as spending some time on the mound. Defensively, he has good pre-pitch movements that give him good feet at first base giving him the ability to center everything up. Eric's defensive abilities should continue to develop as he learns to get in a more athletic fielding position. At the plate, he has good balance and his hands work well, but he needs to let his hands continue to work through the hitting zone after contact. On the mound, he has simple movements, good in line direction, and throws strikes. His pitching tools should continue to improve as he finds some tempo and learn to get extension on his curveball. With two years of high school baseball remaining, Eric has the opportunity to continue to develop his skills and prepare for the next level.

11/11/2010 - Arizona Fall Select Training & Competition - 2010 Eric showed good overall athleticism both on the mound and at 1st base in Arizona. He worked ahead of hitters on the mound and showed good feel with his CB. He was clocked at a new high of 72 MPH. Eric threw strikes with both of his pitches, and pitched to contact. Defensively, Eric has a solid body and good feet around the bag. His components are solid and his arm also played well. Offensively, Eric has an athletic set-up and good balance throughout his swing. He went 5-8 with 2 doubles in game play.

07/10/2010 - Cape Cod Training 2010 - Session 1 Eric is a young two-way player in the OF plus on the mound with a strong, mature frame that is well suited for his positions. Currently, he projects best in the OF for the next level. Feet are active in taking proper routes /angles in working to get behind balls, playing through with momentum to his target. He reads balls well off the bat and is fundamentally sound. Throws display life, carry, and accuracy as hands / feet work well together in getting rid of the baseball quickly. Offensively, McGinn is a solid hitter as he displays an aggressive approach, flashing bat speed as he shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. He has strength in his swing, showing best to the pull side due to long swing path. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 67-71 mph with slight tail. Changeup is best off speed pitch, showing a solid feel for with arm side run. With 2 years to further develop, Eric has potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his offensive and defensive abilities as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
