Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/SSPosition Projection

01/16/2009 - Under Armour Pre-Season All America - 2009 John-Henry is a talented 2-position player. He might be more suited for the infield at this time due to his size, but he has arm strength and athletic ability. At SS, John-Henry shows an above average arm with above average hands. He gets to everything and it all looks smooth and easy. Everything is loose and free in the field. On the mound, John-Henry has balance and a directional delivery. He has a good feel for his off speed pitches and can throw them at any time in the count. With velocities already in the upper 80's, it will be interesting to see how hard this guy throws once he fills out. At the plate, John-Henry has a short line drive swing. He puts the bat on the ball and can work the count. Although defense is his strength, John-Henry shouldn't be overlooked as a hitter as well.

08/08/2008 - ACR-E - Maryland - 7 John increased his 60-time, velocity, and pitching mechanics grades while at this event. On the mound, showed good tempo with proper mechanics which allowed him to attach the strike zone. Good lower half and direction helped develop an 87 mph FB. Showed good deception because arm speed was same with FB and SL. When he fell off to 1B, all pitches were up and in to RH hitter. Showed good SL when he extended thru pitch. At SS, was always hustling after every ball. His hands and feet worked well together and had quick exchange. Throws had decent carry but he cut off most throws. When he extended thru throws, they were accurate to 1B. At the plate, had some BS with a decent transfer. Was able to use all fields and had some pop when he centered ball.

05/18/2008 - College PREP - San Antonio, TX Ybarra seems to be getting physically stronger - his arm and power grades both improved since last fall. He works from an athletic position both fielding and hitting and should continue to improve with overall strength. We have seen him at 82-86 mph with his FB, so there is definitely potential there. He will need to continue to develop his off speed pitches.

07/18/2007 - College PREP - Irving, TX John is an athletic player with two position potential. At SS, arm is loose and quick and has good rhythm. Fields the ball cleanly and plays through the ball well. On the mound, has above average arm strength with a tight sharp CB and deceptive CH. Delivery is also above average. Stays balanced throughout. At the plate, keeps a rhythmic approach with quick hands and a direct path. Needs to work on keeping bat level to cut down pop ups. Overall, John is a solid player.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
