Official Scouting Report

  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

01/16/2009 - Under Armour Pre-Season All America - 2009 Kevin is a two position player who showed best in the outfield at this event. On the mound, though, he cut and tailed a fastball in the 84-86 range, and showed a good feel for a 10/4 slider as well. Balance, rhythm, and direction are all solid. Arm is clean, he repeats his delivery, and he showed good command in his outing. In the outfield, his first step is positive and he takes good angles to the ball. Glove works well and he makes the plays out in front. Exchange is long, but arm strength is above average. Offensively he has a quiet approach with power to the pull side. Has the ability to hit to all fields. Would like to see him level out his plane a bit. Solid athlete with a chance to compete for a spot at the next level both on the mound and in the outfield.

06/19/2008 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - 2008 Kevin increased his velocity and 60-time. At the plate, shows good bat speed with gap power and use of all fields. Has compact swing with quick hands and good balance. Ball explodes off bat and has good 2-strike approach. Better pitch selection and keeping front side closed will improve overall hitting ability. In the OF, has excellent range because he reads ball well off bat, takes the appropriate angle, and has good instincts. Long toss will help improve his arm strength. On the mound, has long easy arm action and ball explodes into zone. Knows how to attack hitters which starts with his ability to throw 1st pitch strike. He tends to rush with off-speed pitches which makes them inconsistent and can't get on top of it because front side leaks.

06/14/2008 - ACR-E - California - 1 Kevin is a tall, lean RHP/OF who showed good athleticism and baseball IQ. On the mound, showed good balance and direction to HP which allowed him to stay closed with FB. CB showed sharp break when he had correct arm speed. Will have better consistency when he has the same release point and arm speed every time. A complete follow thru will create a better finish of pitches. In the OF, showed good arm strength with plus carry. Showed a smooth transition and right idea on how to play OF. Would like to see him get back on balls and not drift. This will help him get behind balls better. At the plate, showed good balance and weight transfer with a line drive approach. Was consistent with decent bat speed. Wraps the bat which produced a long swing and a pull-side approach. Would like to see him load sooner and work on a short-compact swing.

03/16/2008 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA Kevin has a solid athletic body and worked out on the mound and in the outfield. He shows projection at both positions at the college level. He plays hard with a lot of energy in the outfield. He shows a solid approach and takes proper angles in tracking down balls in the outfield. His arm strength is strong average, showing carry. At the plate, Kevin has above average ability. He shows plus bat speed through quick hands that are direct to the baseball. His swing path is level and maintains good extension through the baseball at the point of contact. He consistently finds the barrel. On the mound, Kevin shows an above average fast ball with solid tail and movement. He has two solid average off speed pitches and displays well above average command of all his pitches. Kevin shows a lot of potential and will catch the eye of college coaches.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
