10/19/2008 - College PREP - Sauget (St. Louis), IL Matt is an OF with a small frame with athletic actions in his body. Foot speed is above average and he utilizes his quick, athletic feet in tracking down balls in the outfield displaying solid range. Feet are active and aggressive in coming to get ground balls and taking proper routes / angles in working to get behind fly balls. He has a feel and idea in his defensive play. Arm strength is average from a ' arm slot. He needs to work on raising arm slot and getting on a strict long toss program to aid in building more arm strength. At the plate, Ballard has slightly average ability and power. Bat speed is solid and he does a nice job of spraying balls to all fields. Swing path does get a little long getting the barrel out around the baseball. He is a line drive type hitter but power numbers will increase as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. Matt has potential with a lot of room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
