10/15/2008 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic - 2008 Gustafson showed excellent receiving abilities - he setup low and quiet, gave a low target, showed soft hands and did a great job of keeping his chest and eyes behind the ball. His arm action was quick and short, and he made strong accurate throws. Blocking skills have room to improve. At the plate, he hit with a good approach and showed strike zone recognition skills. He tracked the ball well and showed great hands. Tended to flatten his bat early, and some stiffness got into his arms - extended the barrel early and rotated his shoulders early as well, lost strength in his angle through contact. Can also work to improve his lower body action. Overall, a talented defensive catcher with potential to develop further with the bat.

06/25/2008 - College PREP - Crestwood, IL Matthew is a tall athletic player with potential at the next level. Behind the plate, Matthew has a strong accurate arm as his pop time indicates. As soon as the ball is caught, it is thrown down to the target. His body is quiet when receiving and he does an excellent job in blocking balls in the dirt. He is an above average defender. At the plate, Matthew drives the ball with explosion and power. Everything is easy and quick at the plate and he should impress a lot of coaches during his senior campaign. With his defensive ability and offensive knowledge, Matthew should contribute early in college.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
