08/24/2008 - College PREP - Farmingdale, NY Matt has really improved his hitting grade and abilities from the right side. He shows plus bat speed through a balanced approach. Swing path is level and shows a good feel for the barrel. From the left side, he flashes bat speed through quick hands and shows a line drive approach mostly to the pull side. Hartmann also has improved his defensive abilities. Glove action is soft, sure, and solid in making all the plays. Foot speed is near above average and he shows good range through his lateral movement. He does need to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength. Matt plays hard and will draw interest to himself by the way he plays the game.

07/19/2008 - College PREP - Plymouth Meeting (Philadelphia), PA Matt Hartmann is a smaller player but he can hold his own on the field. At 2B, Matt shows soft hands and good range when approaching the ball. He stays low and turns the double play well. Matt needs to work on getting rid of the ball instead of patting the glove and taking an extra step. At the plate, Matt has ability from both sides. From the right, he shows a level swing with a line drive approach. He needs to better utilize his lower half when swinging which will add power. From the left, Matt's swing is level and he can hit the ball where it is pitched. He gets out of the box quickly and hustles everywhere he goes.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
