12/27/2008 - Under Armour Recruiting Classic 2008 Clark continues to show solid improvement in his baseball abilities. He improved his defensive grades in the outfield, showing range. He takes proper routes and angles in working to get behind the baseball, playing through with momentum to target. He utilizes his athletic feet well in displaying proper footwork around the bag at 1B along with the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. At the plate, Matt shows good pitch recognition along with a solid eye. He drew 6 base on balls. He shows plus bat speed and displays his best power to the pull side. He was 3 for 7 at the plate with a solid 2B to the right centerfield gap. Matthew has potential and will be a solid player if he continues to develop.

10/26/2008 - College PREP - Stockton, CA Matt is a strong, tall player with good body and excelled at the plate during the workout. At the plate, starts with good balance, a quiet load, and has ability to repeat swing. Had good bat speed with ability to extend thru ball with gap power. He is direct to hitting zone which allows him to center ball and has good lower half explosion. At times, he dives at ball instead of letting ball travel which makes him cut off swing. In the OF, was in rhythm with ability to play thru ball. Was able to adjust to ball while in mid-air. When he learns to extend thru throws and crop hops, ball will have life and carry. At 1B, had decent range and arm shows better here. Keeping a low approach allows him to field ball out front and stay low when throwing.

08/23/2008 - ACR-E - California - 3 Clark has an above average body with athleticism and will only improve as his body matures. Showed arm strength behind the plate, would like to see him stay in line with second base, which will help improve accuracy. Receiving, has a low stance, sway, soft hands and works around the ball. Made improvements blocking and working on having a controlled fall forward to keep body balance and deaden balls. At the plate, we have seen him better than the video may show. Has leverage because of size; when centered ball comes off barrel well. Would like to see him get some flexion in his stance to get closer to where his load is going to be. On the mound, topped out at 83 and showed an above average feel for his change-up. Ball had fade and sink and will be a great out pitch for him. Would like to see him get more extension on all of his pitches. Projects very well on the mound because of size- with some instruction, could have a future on the mound as well.

06/19/2008 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - 2008 Matt increased his velocity and 60-time while in Omaha. At the plate, Matt showed the ability to recognize pitches quickly and be selective. Has good bat speed with level path. Showed a late load which made barrel accuracy inconsistent. In the OF, he has a plus arm with ability to take good routes. Overall OF abilities and range will improve with quicker foot speed and more game experience. Behind the plate, had proper footwork and in good throwing position for throws to 2B. Had good carry on ball. Didn't stay down to block cause he kicks back which makes him go up first. While receiving, was late to catch ball which made glove move and take away strikes. On the mound, threw OT and hit 83. Dropping to a ' angle will allow for more arm side run.

04/27/2008 - College PREP - Stockton, CA Matt is a tall lean player with athleticism. Although he plays two positions, he is more suited as a catcher at this point. Behind the plate, Matt has soft hands and a good base for receiving pitches. He has an accurate arm but needs to shorten arm path a little to decrease pop times. He has an idea of how to block balls in the dirt. On the mound, Matt has balance and a good lower half explosion. He has a feel for his off speed pitches. A good long toss program will help increase arm strength. At the plate, Matt has bat speed and power to the gaps. The ball flies off his bat. He could utilize the entire field a little more, but he gets everything out of his swing. Overall, Matt has potential at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
