12/06/2015 - College PREP - Nyack (NYC), NY Matthew is a very intriguing 2-way prospect, showing potential both as a SS and on the mound. He is aggressive in all aspects of the game and plays with very good energy. At the plate he has quick hands and a coordinated swing that generates good bat speed. His trigger is a bit complicated, but he gets to launch on time and is able to impact the baseball and consistently find the barrel. Defensively Matthew has sure hands and is comfortable going to both his forehand and backhand sides. He is a confident defender and seems to react well to the ball off the bat. His low arm slot causes some sink and tail to his throws across the diamond, but he has the arm strength necessary to play the left side. On the mound his fastball sits in the upper 70s, touching 80 and his short arm action allows it to get on hitters quickly. He complements the fastball with a 2-plane curve that has good bite at times and a sinking change that moves, but has a velocity a bit too close to his FB to be as effective as it can be. Overall, this is a strong, athletic young player who should be able to make the necessary refinements and have a bright future on the diamond.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
