06/14/2008 - ACR-E - Maryland - 2 Mike is 2005 graduate and is transferring from Charleston Southern where he spent the last three years. Mike red shirted his freshman year and has two years of eligibility remaining. His body has visibly changed since we last saw him; he has put of several pounds of muscle and looks physically stronger. He is very athletic with raw arm strength and power. Behind the plate his feet worked very well, gained ground throwing and blocked and recovered with ease. Arm worked free and easy with accuracy. He also got on the mound and was consistently 86-88 MPH with raw mechanics. With some work he would be able to contribute there as well. Had a repeatable stoke at the plate, life off the barrel, quick hands, and held the ground. Showed consistent homerun power and the ability to hit line drives. He is a polished player who could contribute right away. Great make-up and student.

03/06/2005 - College PREP - Baltimore, MD We have seen him in 1 workout. Beattie has an athletic body with wide shoulders and strength in his arms and legs. Shows athleticism behind and at the plate - has a tendency to be high effort, but once he understands what his body can do his stock will rise quickly. He has above average catching ability with plus footwork, exchange and arm strength. Best pop time was 1.98 and averaged 2.03, which will improve with less effort. To be a complete package behind the plate he will need to improve blocking technique - having a controlled fall forward gaining ground and not falling to hands. He is strong to above average at the plate with plus bat speed and contact. Power is above average in one zone, if he lets the ball travel and gains extension hitting will rise quickly also. If these changes are made we expect to see him at a class 3 in the future.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
