07/29/2008 - Under Armour Southwest Regional Tournament - 2008 Balbierz displayed some upside on the mound during the UA SW. His fastball (82-84) had good life with arm side run. He has sound mechanics and a good feel for pitching. His 10/4 curveball has some potential with a bit more snap and arm speed. I would like to see his elbow a bit higher to get on top of his curveball. Balbierz has a simple approach at the plate but can be more aggressive. He stays back and has good balance through his swing. Flexibility should be a focal point for him this season. By loosening his body he will also improve himself defensively where he takes a high approach to the ball. He does a good job fielding what he reaches.

06/30/2008 - College PREP - Buffalo, NY Ryan is a two way player on the mound and at 3B and currently projects well at both positions. Arm strength is above average showing life, carry and accuracy across the diamond. Foot speed is also above average displaying range in the infield. Glove action is soft, sure in making all the plays. He does need to work to set his feet on his backhand. At the plate, Balbierz has a solid set up displaying a level swing path. Swing path does get long at times creating a pull type swing. Power numbers will increase as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, Ryan continues to show off his arm strength displaying a heavy ball. Arm action is loose, easy and he works to a quick tempo. Off speed pitches are average and do need some further development but flash potential. He shows plus command with his fastball and breaking ball. Ryan will get some interest from the college coaches over the next year with his abilities.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
