11/10/2011 - Pirate City Select Training - 2011 Ryan showed decent offensive and defensive skills during his time in Pirate City. At the plate, Ryan has good balance, proper hand separation, and he swings in good rhythm. He puts the ball in play consistently and he can hit hard to the pull side. A looser grip, a more still head, and leveling off his swing can help continue to improve offensive numbers. Since we first saw him in September, his hitting mechanics and power have noticeably improved, so he is making adjustments which is great to see. At 2nd base, Ryan presents his glove well and he makes the routine plays. He utilizes his above average foot speed as well showing good range. Fielding further out in front of his body and not dropping to a knee to field can help improve defensive grades. Ryan has shown improvements in just a few months since we first saw him and we expect him to continue to improve with hard work, and as he gets bigger and stronger as he gets older.

09/17/2011 - Accelerated Hitting Weekend (Commuter) Ryan has many good abilities as a hitter, but with some small improvements he will be able to improve his swing and power. Ryan shows great ability to use his lower half, but if he works on letting his upper body work with his lower body he will be able to create a slight separation and increase his power.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
