Official Scouting Report

  • SSPosition Projection

08/31/2008 - College PREP - Nashville, TN Tommy showed as a two way player at SS and now as a catcher. He improved his arm strength and showed it off behind the plate with his low pop time at 2.10. Arm action is quick and he will lower his pop times even more if he polishes up on his exchange and transfer. Receiving skills are average but he does need some instruction and adjustments with his blocking skills. In the infield, defensive abilities are solid. He showed a soft, sure glove action and gets rid of the baseball quickly. He does need to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength. He continues to show a solid feel for the barrel at the plate and will increase his power numbers if he utilizes his lower half more efficiently through the swing. Tommy has abilities and should continue to show steady improvements in all his baseball tools.

07/27/2008 - New York Pro Weekly Training Manion showed solid ability with both the glove and the bat. Barrel accuracy and the ability to use the whole field stood out at the plate, along with the makings of a good hitting approach. Can work to lock out his front side, tended to lunge and drift a bit with his hips. Showed good bat speed and some gap power. In the infield, he showed excellent body control and good overall feel for middle infield play. His fielding fundamentals were sound, his release was quick and he made the slow roller plays nicely. Arm strength is an area for improvement, it is playable but could be better. Overall, a skilled player that needs to improve his speed and strength to help improve his stock.

05/25/2008 - College PREP - Nashville, TN Tommy displays some athletic actions in his play. Arm strength is solid average displaying carry across the diamond. He would benefit from a strict long toss program to further aid in development. Fielding abilities are above average. Glove action is sure and makes all the plays. He shows off his athletic ability in his turns and feeds on the double plays. At the plate, Tommy shows some ability, but needs some instruction and polish on his set up and approach to hit at the next level. Manion shows a lot of potential with room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
